Erasmus is a subprogram aimed at student and staff exchanges, in addition to fostering collaboration among higher education institutions across Europe. The program is named after the humanist and theologian Desiderius Erasmus (1465–1536), who studied and conducted research at the greatest centers of learning of his time—such as Paris, Leuven, and Cambridge. By bequeathing his fortune to the University of Basel, Erasmus became the pioneer of the mobility grants that now bear his name. Like Erasmus himself, the Erasmus program places great importance on advancing career prospects through mobility and learning.
